The War Memorial, which is a crucifix with a figure of Jesus Christ nailed to it, and which has a semi-circular canopy, looks rather Catholic and this is because its style came from a Catholic country –Austria.
Similar shrines had been seen by Rev Bartley after the Great War of 1914-1918.
A committee was formed and the money raised to acquire such a memorial, with a London architect drawing up the exact local requirements. It was Rev Bartley’s wish that a wooded glade should be chosen for the site of the war memorial and the land, which belonged to St Cuthbert’s Grange, was owned by Mr Heatley, who gave it to the village.
The memorial was erected in 1921 and is made of olive wood. It has 29 names from the First World War and 8 names from the Second World War.
The site is regularly and well maintained by the local branch of the British Legion.
